Dave, Chris, and Amber were incredibly helpful, and are very skilled at what they do…we’re so thrilled to have this sign ready to present to you in about 3 weeks!
Present were MOBAA President Patricia Cardinali, Vice President Rick Ricksen, Secretary evan austin, and past Treasurer and current Sign Project Coordinator Kathleen MacGregor.

Ojai’s Official Earth Day Event

In celebration of sustainable living, global awareness, and the joy of nature Food for Thought, Oak Grove School, Ojai Valley Green Coalition, and the Ojai Land Conservancy are teaming up again to host this once-a-year community event – EarthPlay 2012 – 11:00AM – 4:00PM. The day will include local school involvement, environmental exhibits, arts and outdoor activities for all ages, live entertainment, world foods and more. Everything takes place under the trees on Oak Grove School’s 150-acre campus, 220 W. Lomita Avenue, Ojai. Admission is free. Visitors will also have the ample opportunities to find ways to live greener and appreciate the natural wonders we all share. EarthPlay 2012 will be filled with color and creativity. More than 55 exhibitors will share their earth-friendly products and services, provide hands-on activities, and present informational and interactive displays.

Tradition of International Service

Beginning in early childhood, Oak Grove students understand they are part of something bigger than their classrooms, and that we all share responsibility for our global community. Nowhere is this better expressed than in the annual month-long senior trip to India. For the past 16 years, Oak Grove seniors have spent the end of December and the majority of January visiting Oak Grove’s sister schools in India as well as traveling to cities and rural communities.

Preparation and follow-up for the trip is incorporated into the student’s interdisciplinary English and World Cultures courses, and is a culminating rite of passage for Oak Grove secondary students. A community service project is also a fundamental part of this trip’s purpose. During the year, seniors work diligently to earn $1,000 through sales and events in order to fund School in a Box – a comprehensive educational program that provides elementary school children in India an education for an entire year.

Past graduates of Oak Grove describe the lasting effects of their travel experience in India, especially focusing on the sense of gratitude they continue to carry with them, the awareness of taking nothing for granted, and the desire to live more simply. They write that, “…helping others is the best way to put our own problems into perspective; we have a lot to learn from each other and in many ways, all people are the same.”

The current seniors will present their experiences at India Night – Friday, February 24th at 7:00PM in Oak Grove’s student center. The program is free and open to the public. Founded in 1975 by J. Krishnamurti, Oak Grove School offers progressive, college-prep high school, junior high, elementary, and early childhood programs, as well as afterschool classes and summer camps. The Meiners Oaks Business & Artists Association is raising money to mount a “Welcome to Meiners Oaks” sign at the corner of El Roblar Drive and Highway 33. We are inviting bids from sign makers to create and install the sign. We are also accepting donations to fund the sign.

A free, hands-on “Sidewalk Saturday” workshop for children and parents is being offered by the Ojai Academy for the Arts on Saturday, January 28 from 11 AM to Noon.  Oak Grove School is hosting local artists Scot Olsen and Lise Solvang, who will present “Fiber and Clay, Together We Play”.  Scot will bring his pottery wheel and show kids how to make their own pieces of art, and Lise will share the process of making different felted crafts out of natural alpaca fiber, such as yarn hearts for Valentine’s Day. All materials provided at no charge.  At Oak Grove School, 220 West Lomita Ave., Ojai.
